This is a short essay that serves as an appropriate introduction to the thoughts of the Cistercian Abbot Joachim da Fiore (1135-1202), an enlightened monk with prophetic inspiration that created a study of history from a theological point of view.
His main characteristic was to have rebelled against the abuses of the clergy at the time; therefore his writings were used by the “dissident” monks to accuse the Papacy.
His particular vision of history and of the times eventually led Dante Alighieri to place him in his “Divine Comedy” in Heaven “… and he shines by my side, the Calabrian abbot Joachim of gifted prophetic spirit” (“Paraíso” Canto XII, 139-141, of the “Divine Comedy”).
